If you’re familiar with the British Isles like I am, you might not immediately think of Birmingham as an ideal setting for a video game. But what if we travel back to the 14th century and throw some zombies into the mix? Now we’ve got potential. That’s exactly the concept behind “God Save Birmingham,” and after watching about eight minutes of new gameplay footage, it’s skyrocketed to the top of my list of most anticipated zombie games.
I’ll confess, my typical taste in zombie games leans towards cooperative experiences packed with huge, dynamic hordes and over-the-top weaponry. Think “Call of Duty Zombies” or “Dead Island 2.” That’s why I’m eagerly anticipating games like “Killing Floor 3” and the intriguingly quiet “John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando.” However, “God Save Birmingham” has just overshadowed them for me.
This isn’t your typical co-op zombie shooter where you bash the undead with an electrified bat or vacuum them up with a portable jet turbine. Although I’ve caught glimpses of the game before, the new extended trailer from IGN reveals a vibe reminiscent of “The Last of Us,” with its third-person stealth and satisfying takedown animations. While the story might not be as gripping as TLOU, the way you dispose of zombies definitely carries that similar flavor.
The game also emphasizes interacting with your surroundings. You can move furniture to block paths, transform ladders into bridges to cross gaps, and use chairs to reach high ledges. Both you and the zombies are subject to realistic physics, creating a delightful sandbox experience.
The latest trailer highlights the depth of its survival mechanics as well. You’ll manage hunger, thirst, fatigue, and even panic through real-time actions; no quick fixes here. Take a fall, and you’ll injure your leg, affecting your speed. You can break objects down for materials, and there’s even a proper cooking system in place.
Overall, it looks fantastic, and setting a zombie survival game in a medieval world feels refreshingly new. Although “God Save Birmingham” doesn’t have a release date yet, an early access version is on the horizon.
