Every now and then, a mod emerges that’s so exceptional, it transforms into something entirely its own. Just take a look at how PUBG and DayZ evolved from the rich sandbox of Arma, or how The Forgotten City was inspired by Skyrim. Now, we have Total Chaos—a stark, intense horror FPS that essentially serves as an Unreal Engine 5 remake of a standout Doom 2 mod. As part of a talented team that includes this mod’s original creator, they’ve crafted an experience filled with heart-stopping Silent Hill-style terror and some gritty survival elements reminiscent of Stalker. With Steam Next Fest offering a fresh demo, it’s exciting to know that Total Chaos is slated for release later this year.
Originally released in 2018 as a comprehensive conversion mod for Doom 2, Total Chaos has now been reborn as its own standalone title. The game plunges you into a world that’s beautifully bleak and richly atmospheric, asking you to delve into the eerie depths of Fort Oasis. Once a bustling mining town, it’s since succumbed to darkness and decay. Guided only by a crackling, mysterious voice on the radio, you’re on a mission to explore the mines and the structures surrounding them to unearth the town’s grim secrets.
Though it originated from Doom, this isn’t your typical high-octane shooter. While it is an FPS, weapons and ammunition are in short supply. You’ll rely heavily on melee combat to fend off adversaries, requiring you to be both resourceful and thoughtful. You’ll fashion makeshift weapons from the scraps scattered about Fort Oasis, but keep in mind, the inventory weight system means you can’t simply stockpile an arsenal or carry excessive materials.
For those who truly want to dive deep into this chilling universe and face its grotesque creatures head-on, a VR version will be available at launch. Previously, Total Chaos was expected to release sometime in 2025, but the date has now been set. Both the game and its VR counterpart will be available on Steam on Thursday, July 24.
Trigger Happy Interactive, the game’s developer, has announced a post-launch DLC called “Epilogue.” This paid expansion promises to offer an extended storyline, new areas to explore, and a never-before-seen tenth chapter.
Can’t wait until July to get a taste of this thrilling game? Don’t worry—there’s a newly enhanced demo readily available as part of Steam Next Fest. You can jump right in and experience Total Chaos until Monday, March 3.
