About a year ago, I embarked on a journey to craft episodes of 3rd Party 64, focusing on the various Army Men games released for the Nintendo 64. It was around this same period that The Video Game History Foundation unveiled a Christmas-themed commercial for Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes, one of the titles I was covering in my series.
This serendipitous discovery sparked a conversation with Frank Cifaldi, the director of the Video Game History Foundation, about a fascinating new collection they had acquired. This collection, from Michael Mendheim, the creative mind behind the Sarge’s Heroes series, piqued my interest. By the end of our discussion, my inbox was brimming with invaluable documentation about the Army Men franchise. The scope of my project naturally expanded, leading to a more comprehensive exploration of these iconic games. Come late summer 2024, Frank invited me to be part of an upcoming episode of The Video Game History Hour, where we would chat with Mendheim, digging even deeper into the history and nuances of these games.
In this particular episode of 3rd Party 64, you’ll find clips from that insightful interview, along with the rich research derived from the documents shared by The Video Game History Foundation. It’s thanks to their dedication and hard work that I could delve so deeply into these games and present them in this way.
But don’t go anywhere just yet!
While immersed in this exploration, I discovered there was much more about Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes than I could possibly fit into a single video. This realization led to the creation of a second video, which highlights nine particularly intriguing, previously undocumented facts about the game, culled from my research. You can catch this supplementary video on The Video Game History Foundation’s YouTube channel.
