Disney has finally unveiled a sneak peek of Stitch in motion for the live-action Lilo and Stitch remake, and it’s giving off just a hint of awkward vibes.
In recent days, we’ve seen a trailer for another beloved animated film turning into a live-action remake, this time it’s How to Train Your Dragon. Now, we’re getting a glimpse from Disney’s side. Yesterday, Disney dropped a 30-second teaser that features Stitch, who’s trying his best Godzilla impression by trashing a sandcastle resembling the iconic Disney castle, amidst a bunch of regular sandcastles. There’s also a short scene towards the end where a CGI Stitch interacts with text floating in a void, announcing the release date as May 23, 2025. Apart from that, the teaser doesn’t reveal much else — truly a minimalist first look!
The film’s official synopsis mirrors the original storyline, highlighting the bond between a lonely girl named Lilo and Stitch, a mischievous alien designed for chaos. Chris Sanders returns to bring Stitch’s voice to life, while Dean Fleischer Camp, known for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, steps in to direct.
For the cast lineup, newcomer Maia Kealoha is set to bring Lilo to life, with Sydney Agudong from On My Block playing the role of her older sister Nani. Zach Galifianakis, famed for The Hangover, will voice Jumba, Billy Magnussen from Game Night will take on the role of Pleakley, and Hannah Waddingham, known for her work in Ted Lasso, will join as a character who likely is the Grand Councilwoman, though it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.
With the movie scheduled to hit theaters in under a year, a full trailer is likely on the horizon. Meanwhile, Disney aims to rake in some big bucks this holiday season with the release of Moana 2, which hits screens this week.
