Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 Remake was prominently featured in PS5 Pro promotions, but when it was finally released, it didn’t exactly receive rave reviews. This lukewarm reception prompted developers to release a patch that unexpectedly removed a notable PS5 Pro enhancement.
According to Digital Foundry on Twitter, after the update, the game’s Performance Mode no longer uses Sony’s proprietary supersampling (PSSR); instead, it’s been replaced by Unreal Engine 5’s standard Temporal Super Resolution (TSR). Although Sony’s PSSR was initially thought to be a key advantage, its removal seems to have cleared up many of the technical problems that players were experiencing.
The game’s frame rate also saw improvements, now more consistently hitting 60 frames per second after the patch. This enhancement further adds to the skepticism surrounding Sony’s $700 PS5 Pro, which is marketed as a mid-gen upgrade for dedicated gamers.
It’s worth considering whether these changes make the PS5 Pro a more appealing choice or highlight the strengths of alternate game engines. As always, the gaming community remains keenly interested in how these updates affect overall performance and player experience.
