Last year, Wizards of the Coast teamed up with Resolution Games to bring some electrifying news: Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), a beloved classic in tabletop role-playing games, is gearing up for a thrilling virtual reality transformation.
Up until now, they’ve been pretty secretive about the particulars of this new venture. But on Wednesday, fans finally got what they were waiting for—the official game title and some juicy details. Gamers are now one step closer to diving into a VR D&D extravaganza.
Introducing the game as Battlemarked, it taps into Resolution Games’ Demeo system. This system focuses on creating a virtual tabletop vibe with gameplay that mirrors D&D through engaging turn-based combat. It even throws an action point system into the mix, utilizing playing cards for strategy.
What’s particularly interesting is that this marks the first collaboration between Resolution Games and Wizards of the Coast. So, Battlemarked is set to deliver an experience that feels more genuinely D&D than Demeo ever could. That said, Battlemarked does something quite different: it eliminates the need for a Dungeon Master (DM). Instead, the game encourages players to hone in on strategic thinking and decision-making rather than traditional roleplaying.
At its launch, Battlemarked will offer two story-driven campaigns, allowing up to four players to join the adventure. They’re aiming for wide accessibility, with plans to roll it out across platforms like VR, PC, and consoles. While they haven’t confirmed the exact devices, it’s worth noting that Demeo is available on Meta Quest, Pico, SteamVR, PlayStation VR2, PlayStation 5, PC, Mac, and iPad—so there’s a good chance Battlemarked will make its appearance on these platforms too.
Alongside the announcement, an exciting new trailer dropped, displaying the signature art style from Wizards of the Coast. It teases some of the classes and races that players can anticipate, including a formidable Dragonborn fighter, a stealthy Tiefling rogue, and more.
However, some details about Battlemarked remain shrouded in mystery, like its release date and pricing. What the campaigns will entail is also still under wraps. Resolution Games has hinted at the introduction of additional campaigns set in “different D&D settings” down the line, though they weren’t forthcoming with any further answers.
Resolution Games, hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, has been in the gaming scene for a decade now. They’re known for their diverse portfolio, which includes titles like Angry Birds: Isle of Pigs, Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale, and Spatial Ops. According to PitchBook, the company has secured about $38.6 million in funding to date.
Today’s announcement is part of a wider trend—D&D is becoming a powerhouse in mainstream culture. It has expanded into a major multimedia franchise with hit web series like Critical Role and Dimension 20, acclaimed video games such as Baldur’s Gate 3 by Larian Studios, and even a big-screen production, “Honor Among Thieves.”
