Showtime is once again trying to breathe new life into Dexter with a fresh prequel series, Original Sin, and the first trailer has finally dropped.
Even though it’s been over ten years since Dexter wrapped up, the era of reboots and IP-driven content has kept the interest alive. In 2022, we saw the sequel series Dexter: New Blood, set a decade after the original concluded. Now, with the unveiling of the trailer for the upcoming prequel series, Dexter Original Sin, both Paramount and Showtime are promising to take us back in time. Just a heads up, if you haven’t seen the end of New Blood and want to avoid spoilers, proceed with caution. There’s an intriguing connection between the prequel and the sequel that you might want to discover on your own.
If you check out the trailer, you’ll notice it revisits the dramatic ending of New Blood, where we see Dexter lying in the snow, his son Harrison having just shot him. As he is rushed to the hospital, his life quite literally flashes before our eyes, setting the stage for this new prequel. “Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin takes us on a journey with Dexter (played by Patrick Gibson) as he evolves from a student into a revenge-driven serial killer,” according to the official plot description. “When Dexter can no longer suppress his dark urges, he’s got to learn how to harness his inner shadows.”
With guidance from his father, Harry (Christian Slater), Dexter begins adhering to a Code designed to help him eliminate those who deserve to be removed from society without drawing law enforcement’s attention. This task proves particularly challenging for young Dexter as he starts a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.
Fans will be delighted to know that Michael C. Hall returns as the voice of Dexter, providing narration, and there’s even a guest appearance by Sarah Michelle Gellar, known for her role in Buffy. While being a prequel means Dexter’s fate isn’t exactly dangling by a thread, the series promises to be an engaging ride.
Moreover, this series might finally shed light on Dexter’s fate at the end of New Blood, especially with another sequel, Resurrection, on the horizon. It wouldn’t be a shocker if the prequel concludes with Dexter waking up alive and kicking, but you’ll need to wait until December 13, when the show debuts on Paramount+, to find out.
