Rec Room has a wealth of first-party adventures to dive into, whether you’re teaming up with friends or making new ones in random match-ups. Their latest standout addition is ‘Run the Block,’ a game that takes inspiration from the Dreamcast classic, Jet Set Radio, which hit the scene in 2000.
The buzz around ‘Run the Block’ started on December 11th, just after its launch, and it has already drawn in over a million players. Much like Jet Set Radio, this free mini-game places you in a thrilling competition against up to nine other players, challenging you to masterfully race and perform parkour across a sprawling urban landscape.
Though it doesn’t feature the iconic rollerblades of Jet Set Radio from the early 2000s, you’ll still find yourself sprinting, leaping, and grinding along massive rails that zigzag across the city backdrop. Plus, you get the chance to leave your personal mark with your own graffiti tag in this vibrant and artistic cityscape.
Looking back at this past year, Rec Room hasn’t rolled out as many first-party games as it once did. Its biggest offering before ‘Run the Block’ was a charming pet farming simulator called ‘My Little Monster.’
This year has seen Rec Room expand its content library with branded packages, featuring avatar collections linked to popular franchises like ‘Monster High’ and the renowned shooter game, Destiny, developed by Bungie. Simultaneously, the team has put significant effort into enhancing their creator suite, providing users not just the tools to build intricate worlds, but also the opportunity to create and sell assets within the game’s creator economy. On top of that, they introduced full-body avatars earlier this year, greatly expanding customization options.
Adding to its already impressive roster of supported devices, Rec Room became available on the Nintendo Switch in November. This joins its presence on an array of platforms, including PC VR, all Quest devices, the original PSVR, iOS, Android, Pico, Xbox, and PlayStation.
