I’ve been immersed in Monster Hunter Wilds ever since it launched a few weeks ago. My current obsession revolves around climbing the ranks in high-rank zones and debating over which new armor set I should focus on crafting next. Right now, I’m on the trail of the formidable Jin Dahaad, but that sturdy Gravios armor is enticing—perfect for my hammer setup. There’s no shortage of activities in Wilds, yet there’s a particular charm that’s noticeably absent.
I’m talking about the classic delight of dressing up a pig and toting it around like a cherished child.
Fans of Monster Hunter will immediately recognize what I mean: Poogie, the endearing, round-eared pig that’s almost as iconic as the mighty Rathalos itself. Poogies have been a recurring favorite throughout the series. I first stumbled upon one in Monster Hunter World’s hub, where a ritual of pampering the little guy brought musical joy as he basked in the attention. And let’s be honest, in Monster Hunter fashion, even petting Poogie requires skill. Miss the timing, and he’ll dash off until your next quest is done.
Traditionally, in previous Monster Hunter titles, Poogie would roam one of the main areas, and giving him some love before a hunt was said to infuse your adventure with a splash of good luck, supposedly boosting your chances of snagging those elusive monster drops. While some players insist this is a secret feature coded into the game, it’s never been officially confirmed.
But Poogie wasn’t just a charm for better loot! These little piggies were a delight to dress up once you’d earned their trust. Honestly, who could resist the sight of Poogie trotting around in a bee costume? In Monster Hunter World, I’d often cradle Poogie in my arms around the hub, waiting for that telltale controller vibration signaling a hidden treasure spot—YouTuber TagBackTV even made a delightful guide on it.
In Monster Hunter Wilds, while Poogie does make an appearance, you don’t encounter him until you reach chapter three. He’s stationed in a distant village that I hardly visit unless a specific quest calls for it. While this version of Poogie adorably balances a round frog on his back, the interactions aren’t nearly as engaging as in previous games. And sadly, there’s lack of options like stripy pajamas or a snuggly ram suit to dress him in. All that’s left is petting, and at least choosing a new name for him.
With the Title 1 update for Monster Hunter Wilds coming up next week, Capcom has been teasing a vibrant gathering hub alternative to the existing campsites in the Forbidden Lands. The sneak peeks from their 12-minute update video hint at new treats and diversions in the hunters’ Grand Hub, including games and a more expansive kitchen. I’m keeping my fingers crossed, hoping this means the return of the fan-favorite Meowscular Chef.
But let’s be clear, this new hub would be missing something essential unless it includes a cuddly pig I can scoop up and cherish. Capcom, I’m pleading on behalf of us all—especially myself—give us our beloved Poogie moments back!
