MSI has just unveiled its latest line of Claw gaming handhelds, packing a punch with the Intel Core Ultra 7 258V processor, 32GB of RAM, and up to a 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD that MSI assures is easily upgradeable. The two newly launched models, the MSI Claw 8 AI+ and Claw 7 AI+, are almost twins in terms of specs, differing mainly in their screen size and battery capacity, which naturally influences their overall size.
Gamers can now choose between a larger display for that immersive experience or opt for a smaller, more portable device without compromising on performance.
Looking at the detailed specifications, both models share the same robust Intel Core Ultra 7 258V processor and 32GB of integrated memory. The storage solution is quite flexible, supporting up to 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD. For graphics, these handhelds boast the integrated Intel Arc 140 GPU. The Claw 8 AI+ features an 8-inch FHD+ touchscreen with vivid colors and a 120Hz refresh rate, while the Claw 7 AI+ offers a 7-inch version of the same display technology. Audio enthusiasts will appreciate the dual 2W speakers that support DTS and high-resolution audio.
When it comes to connectivity, the Claw 8 AI+ impresses with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 capabilities, while the Claw 7 AI+ comes with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.34. Both models are equipped with a generous array of ports, including two Thunderbolt 4/DP/USB Type-C PD 3.0, a microSD slot, a 3.5mm combo jack, and a power button with a fingerprint sensor.
The Claw 8 AI+ is powered by an 80Whr battery, whereas the Claw 7 AI+ has a slightly smaller 54.5Whr battery. Despite these physical differences, both models operate on Windows 11 Home, ensuring a seamless user experience.
MSI has yet to disclose the official pricing details on its website, but you can already find the Claw 8 AI+ and Claw 7 AI+ on Amazon for preorder. The Claw 8 AI+ starts at $899 for the 1TB variant, whereas the Claw 7 AI+ is available at $799, albeit with a 512GB storage capacity, which is a deviation from the official spec sheet.
These devices stand out primarily because they utilize Intel’s processors, distinguishing them from competitors like the ROG Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go, which typically opt for AMD chips. Notably, MSI has revamped the joysticks, bumpers, D-pads, and hall-effect triggers on these models to enhance precision and ergonomics—an enticing upgrade for gamers.
While Tencent is also eyeing the market with its 11-inch handheld device sporting the same processor, it’s still in development and not yet available in the U.S.
Thanks to Intel’s efficient Lunar Lake chips, the new handhelds promise longer battery life, running at just 17W. MSI claims that these devices deliver “113% higher peak FPS and an average 20% increase in FPS” compared to previous models within the same power range.
The new Claw AI+ handhelds aren’t just about gaming; they’re outfitted with various ports that make them versatile enough to double as mini-PCs. They’ll also feature Copilot+ capabilities and an exclusive App Player for seamless integration of Windows and Android games, adding to their appeal as powerful, multitasking tools.
Overall, MSI’s latest offerings set a new standard for handheld gaming devices, blending exceptional power and functionality into a sleek, portable form. Whether you’re gaming at home or on the go, these handhelds are poised to deliver an exceptional experience.
