As gamers gradually shift their attention to the PS5, the venerable PS4 is starting to see less support. A notable case is a well-loved MMORPG scaling back its availability on older consoles, though it offers a glimmer of hope with a free upgrade path to next-gen versions.
## Black Desert Online for PS4 is shutting down
Pearl Abyss has confirmed that it will halt support for the PS4 and Xbox One editions of Black Desert Online. Fans of this MMORPG have a limited window to continue their adventures on these platforms, as the transition to newer consoles becomes inevitable. The curtain will fall on the PS4 and Xbox One versions during scheduled maintenance on June 26. Thankfully, players are not left behind; they get a complimentary upgrade to the newer version, with all their account details and past purchases seamlessly carried over.
“Rest assured, your game data will be safely stored,” reassures Brian Choi, the Black Desert Console Live Service Manager, addressing the move from PS4 to PS5. “Once you’re set to make the jump to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series, your account and everything tied to Black Desert will be right there waiting for you. We know this might be unwelcome news for some. Yet, Black Desert has been receiving continuous updates aimed at enriching your gaming experience.”
Choi elaborates further, “In our earlier communication, we pointed out that despite our persistent efforts to enhance content for older-gen consoles, we’re hitting hardware roadblocks that hamper the smoothness of delivering the latest updates. After weighing our options, we’ve concluded that dedicating our resources to the PS5 and Xbox Series versions is the optimal approach, ensuring a more robust and enhanced gaming service.”
Since its 2016 debut in the U.S., Black Desert Online has been met with varied feedback. The review aggregator Metacritic shows a score of 73 from 35 critics. It made its way to PS4 and Xbox One back in 2019.
This decision marks a pivotal moment for the game, heralding a new era tailored for current-gen console players while acknowledging the loyal adventurers who journeyed on PS4.
