Microsoft is stepping up its game with the latest Windows 11 update by revamping how Task Manager tracks CPU usage, aiming to mirror the accuracy of well-regarded third-party monitoring tools.
Enhanced CPU Monitoring: Task Manager Gets A Boost In Windows 11 Update
Finally, it looks like Microsoft has waved a white flag to the inadequacy of Task Manager’s performance metrics when stacked against its third-party counterparts. In a move that signifies this acknowledgment, an update is on its way which will refine the calculation method for CPU usage, aligning it closer to what established tools already provide. Essentially, this could mean that Task Manager is about to become a lot more user-friendly and reliable.
We are beginning to roll out a change to the way Task Manager calculates CPU utilization for the Processes, Performance, and Users pages. Task Manager will now use the standard metrics to display CPU workload consistently across all pages and align with industry standards and third-party tools.

While the specifics remain a bit under wraps, the promise is that your CPU stats will now look the same whether you’re peering into Processes, Performance, or Users pages. This consistency should help put Task Manager in line with other monitoring applications, ensuring you might not need to reach for tools like HWINFO anymore. We’ll keep an eye out as the update itself is rolled out.

For those who prefer the existing system, Microsoft isn’t leaving you high and dry. An optional column, dubbed CPU Utility, will be available on the "Details" tab, ensuring you can revert if desired. Currently, this update is wrapped into Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3360, part of the 24H2 update. As such, it will gradually reach users over time. Still, it’s encouraging to see Microsoft focusing on enhancing user experience in such a hands-on way.
