A new Kickstarter is making waves with a PlayStation 5 cooling unit designed to tackle overheating issues, including preventing the rear I/O from melting. When we checked it out, the campaign had already raised $89,000, with aspirations reaching up to $125,000. If you’re interested, the cooling unit is priced starting at $39.
Dubbed the Arctic PS5 cooler, this gadget claims to be the first AI-powered PS5 cooler on the market. It easily clips on to the rear exhaust of your PS5, using either four or six fans to help dissipate heat efficiently. And don’t worry about losing any USB ports; it runs off a single USB and even offers a pass-through port to keep your setup fully functional.
SCRY, the folks behind this innovation, have designed three different models to fit each version of the PS5—the original, which they affectionately call the “fat” model, the PS5 Slim, and the new PS5 Pro. Both the Slim and Pro versions come equipped with four fans, while the “fat” variant boasts six fans for even more cooling power.
The Kickstarter page emphasizes the use of “smart thermal AI” which adjusts fan speed according to the PS5’s internal temperature. However, if you’re wondering how this differs from the PC fan controllers we’ve seen for years, the specifics are still a bit vague. The fans supposedly kick into high gear at 50°C to keep things running cool.
SCRY claims their cooler can lower your PS5’s temperature by 30% compared to usual conditions, dropping it from a maximum of 64°C to just 55°C. Thermal imaging provided by SCRY highlights a 9°C reduction, especially around one of the hottest parts: the ethernet port.
The primary focus here is to safeguard Sony’s latest console from any overheating issues. Just last year, there were whispers about certain games, like Final Fantasy XVI, pushing the console to its limits, occasionally causing the rear connectors to melt.
Alongside the cooler, SCRY is also rolling out a Gen 4 M.2 SSD with an integrated heatsink, all part of this robust Kickstarter effort.
Reaching their stretch goal of $125,000 will unlock a free “vertikal” universal PS5 stand, a nice bonus for backers. The campaign has additional goals at $75,000 and $100,000, though details on those are set to be revealed once unlocked.
