Warner Bros. Games recently pulled the plug on a planned expansion for Hogwarts Legacy, an unannounced DLC that was originally slated for release in 2025. This decision comes as part of broader financial difficulties faced by the gaming giant. Hogwarts Legacy had enjoyed massive success as an action-RPG in 2023, so it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. was eager to continue expanding its Wizarding World franchise. However, the journey hasn’t been smooth. The lackluster performance of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, released in September 2024, added to the woes after previous missteps like the releases of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus. All these challenges seem to have influenced the decision to halt Hogwarts Legacy’s DLC.
Back in March 2025, reports surfaced that Warner Bros.-Discovery decided to axe the Hogwarts Legacy DLC due to “ongoing restructuring” at Avalanche Software. According to a Bloomberg report, the publisher felt that the expansion just didn’t justify the proposed price. Additionally, the “Definitive Edition” that would have bundled the base game with this DLC was also shelved. Interestingly, this expansion was being developed in collaboration with Rocksteady Studios and was set to bring back some chopped content, including a storyline tied to one of the game’s companions. Despite this setback, fans can take solace in the fact that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is actively being developed at Avalanche Software.
The cancellation is yet another indicator of Warner Bros. Games’ recent cost-cutting measures. Just recently, in February 2025, they canceled the much-anticipated Wonder Woman game and closed down three studios, including Monolith Productions, known for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. This follows reports of layoffs at Rocksteady Studios after the underwhelming performance of its Suicide Squad game. It seems the shake-up hasn’t spared anyone, reaching up to the company’s leadership, with negotiations reportedly underway for the departure of President David Haddad later this year.
While the news isn’t great for those hoping for new Hogwarts Legacy content, the sequel appears to be on safer ground. Warner Bros. has previously emphasized the role of the fantasy IP in its strategic plans, suggesting that the upcoming Hogwarts Legacy sequel is not under threat. Fans can remain hopeful that this next chapter in the series will deliver on its promise without facing the same hurdles as its predecessor.
