Yesterday, the folks over at D&D Beyond revealed that they’ll be selling the sourcebook for The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying crafted by the renowned Swedish publishers, Free League. Although D&D Beyond’s announcement bills it as a “brand new adaptation,” it actually hit the shelves last year. This guide draws from the second edition of Free League’s One Ring RPG by Francesco Nepitello. Regardless of its timeline, the ruleset, which has earned accolades, has been reimagined for fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons. It’s among the favorites when it comes to tabletop role-playing in the rich universe of J.R.R. Tolkien, and now, players can effortlessly bring it to life with D&D’s own virtual tabletop.
This hefty 240-page volume packs in six classes, 12 subclasses, 14 species, and 42 unique feats. All of these are ready for adventurers to incorporate using D&D Beyond’s character creation tool. Free League has woven in rules for journeying that capture the spirit of epic tales from Tolkien’s novels—stories that inspired modern fantasy and the creation of D&D itself. Excitingly, the guide includes adventure paths tailored for characters from levels 1 to 10, complete with fresh maps and creatures compatible with D&D Beyond’s freshly tested tactical VTT, Maps, which is now in beta.
Every mechanic in this sourcebook has been specially fine-tuned for Dungeons & Dragons’ fifth edition. Though it’s not updated for the 2024 edition, its backward compatibility ensures players won’t miss a beat integrating it into their 2024 gaming. You can snag the D&D Beyond edition for a bargain price of $29.99, while the original version is on offer for just over $50 on Free League’s website.
