Fans who fell in love with the bird-themed game, Wingspan, are about to have more reasons to rejoice as they prepare to dive into a new adventure—literally.
Jamey Stegmaier, one of the co-founders of Stonemaier Games, shared some exciting news on Wednesday. Wingspan is getting a sequel called Finspan, and this time, the focus isn’t on our feathered friends but rather on the wonders of fish and ocean ecology. Gamers can look forward to exploring this aquatic world later this month, on January 22.
Just like its predecessor, Finspan promises to be a “competitive card-driven engine-building game” that can entertain up to five players. It also features a “robust solo mode” crafted by the innovators at Automa Factory. The game has been designed by David Gordon, known for Monkey Palace, alongside Michael O’Connell. Visuals come courtesy of the talented Ana María Martínez, Catalina Martínez, and Mesa Schumacher, who have done an excellent job capturing the beauty of the underwater realm. While Elizabeth Hargrave, the original mastermind behind Wingspan, felt she didn’t have the capacity to tackle this new environment, she did lend her expertise during the game’s development.
“I couldn’t be happier that someone else was eager to take this project on,” Hargrave expressed in a statement. “Much like with Wyrmspan, I engaged with the game, offering insights at several critical stages of development. It’s been fascinating to assist in crafting games that feel connected to Wingspan while offering a fresh gameplay experience.”
Both Wingspan and its dragon-themed counterpart, Wyrmspan, are acclaimed for their stunning artwork. Finspan is expected to carry on this tradition with its array of 125 fish cards, each adorned with naturalist illustrations and intriguing facts about the creatures. According to the official information, players will engage in expanding their collection of fish, placing fish eyes, and hatching these into schools. Victory goes to the player who amasses the most points through fish eggs, young fish, schools, and other achievements.
For those eager to explore how Finspan stacks up against Wingspan, Stonemaier Games has thoughtfully provided an online sneak peek of the rulebook.
