This summer, Castle Crashers fans have something exciting to look forward to with the release of a brand new DLC titled “Painter Boss Paradise.” It’s a fresh expansion for the vibrant and much-loved game, coming almost two decades after Castle Crashers first made its debut. This marks a milestone as the fourth DLC from developer The Behemoth, the first of its kind since way back in 2011.
Originally launching in 2008, Castle Crashers captivated players with its playful twist on the classic four-player beat-em-up genre. Over the years, it has seen millions of copies sold across different platforms, with rave reviews to match. This quirky journey through a cartoonish medieval world has since received a remastered edition and a wealth of additional content, including new characters and mini-games. Meanwhile, The Behemoth’s latest creation outside of remasters, the 2023 game Alien Hominid Invasion, continued the trend with its co-op play style reminiscent of Castle Crashers.
The upcoming DLC was officially announced in June 2024, and it’s set to launch exclusively on Steam in the summer of 2025. It draws inspiration from an unassuming character from the original game – The Painter, a minion of the Evil Wizard. Dubbed “Painter Boss Paradise,” this DLC introduces a bundle of new content. Players can explore new skins and weapons, and meet the intriguing Paint Junior, who battles foes with a giant pencil. Moreover, for the first time, players can create and share their own custom skins thanks to Steam Workshop integration. These custom avatars come equipped with their animations and can replace player characters as well as ordinary enemies. Additionally, any magical abilities featured in the original game are accessible to these user-generated characters.
The expansion doesn’t stop there. Players are treated to an overhauled world map complete with playful animated Easter eggs, and a much-anticipated auto-potion feature is also part of the mix. Plus, there are several quality-of-life enhancements aimed at streamlining players’ experiences. As of now, this new content is rolling out only on Steam. However, Dan Paladin, co-founder of The Behemoth, teased a potential console release with a hopeful “probably” when asked about future availability on other platforms.
For die-hard fans of Castle Crashers, the launch of “Painter Boss Paradise” marks the first wave of fresh content since the Pink Knight Pack. Set at a tempting price of $3.99, this DLC is expected to up the zany ante for a game already known for its crazy antics. With this new addition, it’s clear that The Behemoth remains committed to supporting and developing its projects over the long haul. Who knows? This might just be the beginning of yet another chapter in the wacky tale of Castle Crashers.
