Ayaneo, well-known for its handheld gaming consoles, has just launched its latest flagship, the Ayaneo 3, through crowdfunding. This third-generation device is making waves with its innovative modular controller design. Detailed on its Indiegogo page, the Ayaneo 3 offers a Standard Module, featuring joysticks, a D-pad, and the classic ABXY buttons; a Touchpad Module that swaps the joysticks for a touchpad; and a Fighting Module that introduces a six-button setup in place of the typical right ABXY and joystick combo.
What truly sets this console apart is the flexibility to mix and match these modules and even install them upside down, leading to a whopping 56 different layout combinations. This degree of customization allows gamers to tailor their console to perfectly fit their playstyle and preferences. Our only reservation is about the motorized mechanism used to eject the modules, which seems a bit complex. However, we’ll reserve final judgment until we can try it firsthand.
In terms of performance, one of the Ayaneo 3’s variants boasts the latest AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 CPU, marking a first for gaming handhelds and promising top-notch power. For those who might not need all that horsepower, there’s also the option to go with the AMD Ryzen 7 8840U processor.
The device is available in several configurations. Buyers can choose between a 7-inch screen with either a 120 Hz LCD that offers up to 500 nits of brightness or a stunning 144 Hz OLED display that can reach up to 800 nits. Interestingly, the price remains the same regardless of which display you choose. Memory starts at 16GB with the 8840U processor but can reach up to 64GB if you opt for the HX 370, while storage options range from 512GB to a massive 4TB.
Starting at $899 for the most basic version, which excludes extra controller modules, the Ayaneo 3 could set you back up to $2,099 for the fully-loaded variant. Fortunately, there are discounts ranging from $200 to $300 if you purchase during the campaign.
It’s important to note, though, that the less expensive versions don’t include the extra controller modules. These are bundled only with the more premium 64GB/2TB models. Unfortunately, Ayaneo isn’t offering these modules as separate purchases, so you’ll need to go for the pricier variants to get them.
As of now, Ayaneo has already surpassed its crowdfunding goal of $50,000, meaning production is likely just around the corner. Ayaneo has established a reputation for fulfilling its promises, so backers can feel confident about eventually receiving the product.
That said, it’s worth remembering that contributing to a crowdfunded project carries its own risks. Even reaching funding targets doesn’t guarantee you’ll receive a finished product, despite a company’s solid track record. By backing the Ayaneo 3, you’re essentially investing in the brand and sharing in the risks involved in bringing a new product to market. However, as an early supporter, you’ll enjoy a significant discount and the excitement of being among the first to experience this cutting-edge device.
