As my colleagues, who are staunch fans of the original Elder Scrolls, gather to celebrate the unveiling of the Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remake, some of us with a keen eye on what’s coming next are thrilled by some unexpected news. Todd Howard himself decided to drop a little nugget about The Elder Scrolls 6, affirming that it is indeed still in development. He even went so far as to say, “obviously we’re working on the 6th chapter here,” right before diving into all the exciting tidbits about the Oblivion Remaster.
Now, let that sink in. This is possibly the most substantial piece of news regarding The Elder Scrolls 6 since back in March 2024, when Bethesda confirmed that early builds had been circulated for testers. Word was that these testers found the game enjoyable. I mean, that’s the least you’d hope for, right?
Prior to this, we had heard from a former Skyrim designer who advised us not to expect any significant updates on ES6 until just six months before its official release. This was back in October 2023. A month earlier, Phil Spencer bravely predicted that ES6 was still five years away from launch. At the time, this seemed rather amusing, but now, nearly two years later, we’re still waiting for substantial updates.
In terms of official updates from Bethesda, they’ve been pretty silent for years. It wasn’t until August 2023 that they finally confirmed that development was underway—a good five years after announcing the game at E3. Could it be that they announced it a bit prematurely? Just a thought.
Jokes and sarcasm aside, it’s refreshing to get even the tiniest hint that Elder Scrolls 6 is alive and kicking. It’s been quite a journey—back when it was announced, I was still in school, and now I’m navigating adulthood with bills, bad habits, and dating apps. Bethesda, known widely for crafting stellar first-person RPGs, is surely cooking up something amazing. But seriously, could we at least get some concept art or something? I mean, remember in the movie Taken when Liam Neeson had more proof his daughter was alive than we do for this game?
We’d love to hear from you in the comments. Do you still have faith in this game? And how deep into student loan debt do you think I’ll be by the time Elder Scrolls 6 finally drops?
