Nintendo has made quite the unconventional mark on Amazon Japan, establishing itself at the top of a category you wouldn’t expect: wall clocks. This achievement is underscored by an ongoing frenzy for the product, resulting in quick sell-outs across various platforms, not just Amazon.
Often known for thinking outside the box, Nintendo has once again surprised both fans and casual observers with its latest creation, the Nintendo Sound Clock Alarmo. Initially unveiled to a surprised audience of Nintendo enthusiasts, it rolled out exclusively to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers before expanding its reach. This strategic move has now translated into a notable accomplishment for Nintendo.
On April 21, the Alarmo became Amazon Japan’s top-selling item in the wall clock category—though, ironically, it’s not actually designed to hang on walls. Despite being intended as a bedside alarm clock, its availability on Amazon has rocketed it to the number one spot. It seems to have left all other contenders in the dust, regardless of this minor role reversal.
The device continues to garner enthusiasm from fans, even though some were originally disappointed, having hoped for updates about Nintendo’s anticipated Switch 2. To handle demand, Nintendo initially offered the Alarmo to its Switch Online subscribers before widening access, albeit with some delays. Despite being tailored for solo use with limited direct gaming integration, its appeal remains strong. Nintendo has kept it fresh with regular updates that include musical and sound excerpts from its beloved games, delighting both new owners and dedicated fans.
While the Alarmo’s success is a highlight in Japan, its US performance hasn’t been as noteworthy. Even there, it’s sold out, though available from secondary sellers at a premium. As excitement builds around the soon-to-open pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2, it’s unclear how long the Alarmo’s momentum will continue, but for now, it enjoys its moment in the spotlight.
