Ubisoft, the renowned French publisher, is apparently in the midst of crafting a new battle royale game set to compete head-to-head with Apex Legends.
According to whispers from Insider Gaming, this new project—currently known by its codename, Scout—bears a striking resemblance to the popular title from Respawn and EA. Interestingly, some early artwork for this game once doubled as a thumbnail for the project, suggesting a strong visual similarity. Not only that, but rumor has it that some of Scout’s characters closely mimic those from Apex Legends. Ubisoft has been quietly working on this for a while.
The strategy behind this move seems to be Ubisoft’s anticipation of attracting gamers who might be drifting away from Apex Legends, a game that has been facing a bit of a financial slump, as acknowledged by its publisher, Electronic Arts.
One insider shared, “It seems Ubisoft is targeting the drop in Apex’s player numbers, seeing a potential opportunity to introduce another hero-focused battle royale into the market.”
This isn’t Ubisoft’s first attempt to conquer the free-to-play battle royale arena. They ventured in with Hyperscape in 2020, but that endeavor only lasted 18 months before fading away. And, it’s worth noting, this news aligns with the recent announcement of Ubisoft pulling the plug on another free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, by the end of 2024.
Meanwhile, fans of Apex Legends have something to look forward to, as there’s already buzz about a 2.0 version expected to hit sometime after April 2026.
