nDreams, the creative mind behind the arena shooter FRENZIES, has announced some major updates for the game. While players can expect it to step out of early access by the end of the year, there is a change of plans regarding its release on PSVR 2; it won’t be arriving on that platform as previously anticipated.
In a recent statement, the nDreams team shared their future plans. They expressed excitement about making FRENZIES free-to-play once it transitions from Early Access. Since its debut on Meta Quest, the chaotic charm of FRENZIES has garnered a positive response from gamers, motivating the developers to refine the experience further as they prepare for the full release.
The team is determined to deliver the best version of FRENZIES possible, resulting in the decision to focus their efforts solely on the Meta Quest platform. Understandably, this will be disappointing news for PSVR 2 enthusiasts who were eagerly waiting. However, nDreams assures fans that they have other thrilling announcements related to PSVR 2 in the pipeline. In the coming weeks, players can look forward to updates rolling out as part of their Early Access roadmap.
Having launched on Quest 2 and later devices back in October 2024, FRENZIES offers high-speed arena combat blended with a variety of traditional weapons and game modes. This promising gameplay is tailored for a seamless VR adventure, providing a surprisingly robust experience.
Though PSVR 2 users may feel let down by this development, the studio’s decision is understandable when you look at the bigger picture. The Quest platform has seen a growth spurt, particularly with younger gamers, especially after the introduction of the $300 Quest 3S. This boost has naturally increased the appetite for free-to-play games on the platform.
Samantha Ryan, Meta’s VP of Metaverse Content, remarked in February that free-to-play is set to become a more widely adopted strategy among developers who have traditionally depended on premium apps. Nevertheless, Ryan expects both models to coexist harmoniously.
Amidst an increasingly challenging economic environment, nDreams might be aiming to maximize engagement by tapping into its largest potential player base. Notably, the UK-based studio recently merged its nDreams Studio Orbital and nDreams Studio into a new entity known as ‘Compass’, following a phase of workforce reductions.
Despite the shifts, nDreams remains one of the senior players in the XR gaming arena, with a rich history of crafting and publishing top-tier VR games. Some of their standout titles include Vendetta Forever, Power Wash Simulator VR, Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, Synapse, Fracked, Little Cities, and Phantom: Cover Ops.
