Days Gone Remastered is set to hit PlayStation 5 consoles on April 25, offering fans the ultimate version of the game with a host of new modes, features, and technical improvements taking full advantage of the PS5 and PS5 Pro’s capabilities. The additions include fresh game modes such as Horde Assault, Permadeath, and Speedrun, which will also become available on PC through the Broken Road DLC. Whether this is your first foray into Days Gone or a return journey on your trusty Drifter bike, there’s plenty of exciting content and discoveries awaiting you. Don’t forget to check out our announcement blog for deeper insights into all the new features.
One of the most notable additions in Days Gone Remastered is the Horde Assault mode—an intense survival arcade experience. Before we dive into the specifics, make sure to watch the gameplay trailer below to get a taste of what’s in store.
What is Horde Assault mode?
Horde Assault is designed to push players to their limits, requiring you to survive against swelling horde numbers while aiming for the highest possible score. You’ll face off against not just the Freakers, but also formidable foes like Breakers, Reachers, and the daunting Rager bears. The landscape itself is ever-evolving, making survival increasingly difficult the longer you hold out. Crafted from the ethos of “This World Comes For You,” Horde Assault uniquely highlights the core gameplay of Days Gone’s open world. It’s a chance to flex your survival skills and show those Freakers who’s really in charge.
You’ll kick off your Horde Assault adventure dropping into the Cascade region with just a sidearm. Your first task is to battle your way to your Drifter bike, essential for navigating the expansive terrain. Scattered throughout the map are Supply Boxes, crucial for acquiring powerful weapons that might just be the difference between life and death. With more than 20 weapons at your disposal, including a new flamethrower that isn’t found in Story mode, each Supply Box opens fresh possibilities. Every time you start the game anew, the weapons found in these boxes are randomly selected.
Fighting for survival isn’t easy, but completing Side Jobs can extend your battle by refilling resources and scoring extra XP. These mini-objectives are vital for staying in the game, especially because running out of ammo with a horde of up to 800 Freakers on your tail isn’t exactly ideal. Should you manage to last 30 minutes on any map, you’ll face the Ultimate Horde—a relentless and endless chase for survival. But enough from us—you’ll have to see it to believe it.
Survive
Progressing in level within Horde Assault brings various rewards, including never-before-playable characters, new cosmetic patches, and unique Injectors that significantly impact gameplay.
Fans of Days Gone will recognize Injectors from the main storyline, and this concept is elevated in Horde Assault with game-changing modifiers. Journeying toward becoming a Legendary Survivor, you’ll collect a total of 24 unique Injectors—12 Positive and 12 Negative. Positive Injectors up your score while ramping up the difficulty, whereas Negative Injectors impose a score penalty but offer survival advantages.
While we want to keep some surprises under wraps, we can tease a couple of the Injectors. For example, the Exploding Freakers Injector causes Freakers to explode upon death—handy when faced with massive hordes. Then there’s Wanted, which starts you at maximum heat level, instantly turning up the challenge to a point only the toughest can endure.
As you navigate Horde Assault, you’ll climb through a Reward path featuring 35 levels. Each new level offers rewards, including Injectors, character skins, and cosmetic patches. Joining the roster are six all-new characters, such as O’Brian, Lisa, and the fan-favorite Skizzo, making the experience even richer.
Cosmetic patches make their return for those familiar with the 2019 Challenges, allowing you to flaunt them as Deacon. These patches, accessible through the Enhanced Photo Mode, also carry over to the Story mode. On top of the Reward path, achieving target scores in all four regions grants bonus rewards. One highly anticipated item, requested fervently by players, awaits those who succeed. Hint: It involves your bike.
Though Horde Assault is classified as endgame content, it’s ready for you as soon as Days Gone Remastered launches. Newcomers might want to learn the combat ropes by exploring the story first, but nothing stops you from diving straight into the unique challenges of Days Gone’s infamous hordes. Prepare for an additional 10 hours of intense gameplay layered on an already content-rich experience, ensuring plenty of adventure in Days Gone’s universe.
