Alta, the creative minds behind A Township Tale (2021), recently unveiled their progress on the highly anticipated dungeon-crawler extraction game titled REAVE. In the latest sneak peek, the team offered a closer look at the game’s evolving systems, alongside an introduction to a brand-new dungeon and a fearsome enemy, reminding us all that the project is still under active development.
In their newest development log, the team showcased several updates, including the unveiling of the largest area in the game thus far—aptly named ‘The Fallen Bastion’. Lead environment artist Sean Ellis described it as an intriguing mix of open spaces, constricted corridors, and varying light levels—perfect for planning ambushes on fellow players or skillfully avoiding enemies.
At the heart of this colossal space lies a magical pedestal, serving as the stage where players will summon boss battles. For now, the challenge is embodied by a giant spider, which acts as a stand-in to test the dynamics of these encounters. "Rest assured, the spider is not a permanent fixture," the studio clarifies, "but it gives us a valuable reference point for real boss fights as we fine-tune more specialized creatures."
The team continues to enhance and update many of the previously shown areas, indicating that significant changes and even complete overhauls might occur as development progresses.
Additionally, Alta previewed a fresh enemy model to take the place of the current placeholder skeletons. These new adversaries will vary in difficulty, determined by the type of weapon and armor they possess.
In REAVE, Echoes, the in-game currency (though likely a temporary name), play a central role. These Echoes accumulate in a vessel over time and are released upon defeating enemies or discovered throughout the environment. They are crucial for accessing special loot rooms and are required to exit dungeons, transitioning players back to the game’s social hub where they can trade their hard-earned loot.
For those eager to dive into early gameplay, joining the game’s Discord community offers opportunities for testing through limited slots. While a release date remains unannounced, the team has confirmed their focus on Quest 2 and later models, as well as PC VR headsets.
