Following Bloober Team’s fantastic remake of Silent Hill 2, I’ve developed a real trust in their unique take on horror games. Their upcoming project, Cronos: The New Dawn, looks particularly promising and seems to channel a gory, Dead Space-like ambiance that instantly catches the eye.
In a recent showcase, co-directors Wojciech Piejko and Jacek Zięba didn’t shy away from discussing the influences shaping this sci-fi survival horror experience. They’re drawing inspiration from a diverse range of media, including John Carpenter’s chilling classic, The Thing, the mind-bending German series Dark, and Terry Gilliam’s time-traveling narrative in 12 Monkeys. On the gaming side, they’re influenced by iconic titles like Dead Space and Dark Souls. Cronos doesn’t just borrow ideas though; it injects its own flair. Like Dead Space, you’ll face humans warped into terrifying creatures, all from an over-the-shoulder perspective that feels both familiar and fresh. The directors also note that while Cronos includes a mechanic for dismantling limbs, they’re putting a unique twist on it compared to what we saw from Visceral Games.
Following up on last October’s cinematic trailer for Cronos: The New Dawn, Piejko and Zięba gave us a deeper dive into the gameplay through a developer diary released on Thursday. They reveal that you’ll take on the role of the Traveller, akin to a deep-sea diver exploring the vast depths of time. This character ventures into the remnants of civilization, searching for survivors. The game’s alternate reality has been devastated by an event known as the Change, which, according to the storyline, wiped out our world back in the 1980s.
Having previously worked on notable titles like Observer and The Medium, Piejko and Zięba are seasoned hands in crafting sci-fi and psychological horror. Cronos: The New Dawn marks an exciting new chapter for Bloober Team as they embark on this original creation, with more collaborations with Konami on the horizon.
