Veteran VR Studio Phaser Lock Interactive, Creator of ‘Primal Hunt’, Announces Closure

Phaser Lock Interactive, the creative force behind popular titles like the Quest-exclusive Primal Hunt (2023), recently announced its closure due to challenging economic conditions and the complexities facing the gaming industry today.

This Austin, Texas-based VR studio has been crafting engaging experiences since its inception in 2015, contributing a variety of games to the PC VR landscape. Some of their notable works include the bow-shooter Twisted Arrow (2016) and the strategy-driven titles Final Approach (2016) and Final Assault (2019).

Their latest offering in 2023, Primal Hunt, tapped into the nostalgic vibes of Turok, blending it with Twisted Arrow’s bow-shooting mechanics for a unique dinosaur-hunting adventure, exclusively available on the Quest platform.

Despite receiving a commendable 4.3 out of 5 stars from users on the Horizon Store, Primal Hunt struggled to capture a wide audience. With only 201 reviews penned at its $30 price tag, it didn’t quite hit the mainstream.

Following the launch of Primal Hunt on Quest, the studio shifted its focus from a full-time VR endeavor to developing a multiplayer version of the game for Roblox. This move proved initially successful, drawing over 5.4 million visits. However, the last update on the platform came in April 2024, leaving many to wonder about Primal Hunt’s fate.

Adding to this uncertainty was the departure of co-founder and former executive, Michael Daubert, in June 2024, as indicated on LinkedIn. His exit cast further doubt on the studio’s direction and future plans.
