Campaigns have traditionally taken a backseat in the Battlefield universe. Yet, throughout its 23 years, Battlefield has delivered some unforgettable solo experiences, particularly in 2011’s Battlefield 3.
Many fans, including the franchise’s new leader Vince Zampella, still view Battlefield 3 as the pinnacle of the series. It captivated with its robust multiplayer gameplay featuring cutting-edge destruction physics and superb map design. Moreover, the game boasted a cinematic campaign and a co-op mode—all available right from the start. It’s no wonder Battlefield 6 aims to recapture that golden era, drawing from the rich legacy of its predecessors.
One mission from Battlefield 3 that still resonates is ‘Going Hunting.’ As the military shooter genre witnessed more cinematic experiences, particularly from Call of Duty, Battlefield responded with its own breathtaking campaigns. While Battlefield 3’s story and characters weren’t its strongest suit, missions like ‘Going Hunting’ are equally striking as Call of Duty’s best moments.
In ‘Going Hunting,’ the player steps into the shoes of Lt. Jennifer Hawkins, a Weapons System Officer piloting a jet. The mission involves taking down hostile jets and launching missiles at targets on the ground. While gameplay aligns with standard turret sequences, the mission’s ambiance and setting elevate it. Starting on an aircraft carrier in the midst of a storm, ‘Going Hunting’ teases a remarkable experience right from the outset.
The buildup is palpable as players perform pre-flight checks on an F-18 fighter jet under the looming storm clouds. The accompanying Battlefield theme slowly intensifies, blending seamlessly with the aesthetic beauty around. Once airborne, the mission delivers a heart-stopping aerial dogfight, amplified by top-notch sound design and visuals that remain impressive over a decade later. This commitment to realism left an indelible mark on fans, making the mission unforgettable.
Reflecting on this, Battlefield 1’s ‘Friends in High Places’ successfully captured a similar cinematic essence, although in a different setting.
Looking forward to Battlefield 6, there’s potential to revisit and enhance the jet mission paradigm. In February, David Goldfarb, Battlefield 3’s lead designer, shared insights on ‘Going Hunting.’ He mentioned that initially, they envisioned free-flight mechanics, but it compromised the asset quality.
With technological advancements, Battlefield 6 could realize that original vision. Including a mission that allows players full control of a jet fighter, wrapped in a cinematic experience akin to ‘Going Hunting,’ could revive the franchise’s earlier grounded realism. Such an enhancement could resonate well with players, reviving the thrill and authenticity Battlefield 3 achieved back in its heyday.
