Steel Wool Studios dropped some big news earlier this week about their upcoming release, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic, which will be available for PS5 and PC on June 13th. Interestingly, the game, initially showcased for the PSVR 2, no longer includes any mention of VR support, sparking a fair amount of curiosity and speculation.
The game first appeared in playable form on the PSVR 2 platform at PAX West 2024, hinting at an exciting venture into both VR and standard gameplay from Steel Wool Studios. This studio, backed by a $5 million boost from HTC back in 2016, has been crafting VR-centric games since it opened its doors in 2012. They’re the team behind titles like 2023’s Hello Neighbor: Search and Rescue, 2019’s FNAF: Help Wanted, and its follow-up in 2024.
Despite revealing the release date for the newest chapter in the FNAF saga, all trace of PSVR 2 involvement has vanished from marketing materials. This includes the PlayStation Store page for FNAF: Secret of the Mimic. Although previously listed as having optional VR support, web archives show any reference has since been nixed.
Just the other day, a post on PlayStation’s official channels briefly mentioned PSVR 2 compatibility during the release date announcement on February 12th, but it’s now been taken down.
Questions remain unanswered about when, or even if, PSVR 2 support will make its way to the game. There’s also a question mark hanging over whether the PC versions—slated for release on both the Epic Games Store and Steam—will feature any VR options. We’ve reached out to Steel Wool Studios for clarity but are still waiting on a reply. As soon as we have updates, including whether this is simply a delay for the VR component or another strategy altogether, we’ll be sure to share them.
In this latest FNAF installment, players will find themselves in the eerie, abandoned workshop of Murray’s Costume Manor, tasked with unraveling the mysteries left by its elusive creator, Edwin Murray. The game introduces the Mimic, a prototype endoskeleton capable of assuming any costume and becoming any figure, even those you dread most.
The game’s vibe is all about survival and stealth, where players must rely on sharp instincts, a few gadgets, and a heavily censored corporate briefing. Your mission is to recover Fazbear’s valuable prototype technology, all while piecing together cryptic clues and avoiding a relentless shadow that’s determined to eliminate unwelcome visitors.
