A seasoned analyst suggests that if the Nintendo Switch 2 rolls out in early 2025, PlayStation 5 sales are likely to surpass it in the U.S. market. Circana’s Mat Piscatella forecasts that the launch might be hindered by supply issues, thanks to the overwhelming anticipation for Nintendo’s upcoming console.
### Can PS5 Outshine Switch 2 in US Sales If Supply Can Keep Up?
Piscatella hasn’t provided much detail on why he expects the PS5 to outpace the Switch 2 during its debut, aside from the predicted supply limitations and a potential late 2025 release. It does raise the question, however, of whether his prediction would change if Nintendo avoids hardware shortages.
Despite the PS5 being further along in its lifespan, this is a daring prediction. However, if Grand Theft Auto 6 indeed hits the shelves this year, we could see a significant spike in demand for Sony’s console.
“I’m projecting Nintendo’s next-gen device to sell 4.3 million units in the U.S. throughout 2025, assuming it launches in the first half. This would account for about one-third of all video game console hardware units sold during the year, not including PC Portables,” Piscatella wrote on Bluesky. “The number of units sold will naturally depend on manufacturing capability. I still believe the PlayStation 5 will lead in total hardware units sold in the U.S. over the year.”
We’d love to hear what you think about this prediction!
