Jim Carrey has once again donned the role of the mustachioed villain, Dr. Robotnik, in Sonic 3, and it seems he’s open to returning for future Sonic films—like a potential Sonic 4—if the right fun idea comes along.
After nearly stepping away from the spotlight, Carrey made a comeback for Sonic 3. Speaking on the red carpet, he humorously mentioned that he returned—after previously jesting that a script “written in gold ink” might tempt him back—because he found himself in need of cash after some significant spending.
In a chat with Japanese YouTube channel Cinema Today, Carrey reflected on the possibility of joining more Sonic adventures. “I’m definitely open,” he said. “If they bring me an idea and I think, ‘that sounds fun,’ I’ll do it. I’m not tied down to anything unless it genuinely grabs my interest.”
Expressing his fondness for the team behind the movies, Carrey shared, “I love this crew, I love this gang, and the fans too. There’s so much positive energy and great feedback from the fans. They even suggest ideas, and I feel like we’re all in this together.”
At the start of this interview, Carrey playfully mentioned how he likes to “power-rest between projects” and made a face that, while not quite at the level of his famous Grinch expression, was amusing enough to earn a solid 8/10 in my unofficial ranking. Plus, it was accompanied by a quirky sound, adding to its charm.
And let’s face it, moments like these offer a light-hearted escape, far removed from revisiting certain Wikipedia entries about Carrey’s past views or those NFT ventures.
In other Sonic 3 developments, writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller revealed last year which other games they’d consider adapting, sparking curiosity and imagination about what might come next.
