The beloved VR combat simulator, Blade & Sorcery (2024), reached a major milestone with its significant 1.0 update in June. Despite this achievement, the developers at Warpfrog aren’t resting on their laurels. They’re already diving into their next project, which promises to be just as “highly moddable” as their celebrated physics-based combat game.
While details about the new game are still under wraps, Warpfrog has hinted to Road to VR that this upcoming release will be rooted in virtual reality, incorporating the signature elements fans have come to expect from their work. This means we can anticipate a strong focus on physics-based interactions and a commitment to simulation, which have become hallmarks of Warpfrog’s games.
One exciting aspect that fans will surely appreciate is Warpfrog’s commitment to ensuring the new game remains as open to modifications as Blade & Sorcery. For those unfamiliar, Blade & Sorcery is praised for its easy modding capabilities. With tools like the Nexus Mod Manager, players can effortlessly tweak their game by adding features like more sparks during weapon clashes or importing custom maps and weapons to enhance gameplay.
Back in October, while discussing future plans with Meta, the team at Warpfrog mentioned that they are integrating a new framework into this upcoming game. This decision was largely driven by the need to replace the old, maxed-out framework used during Blade & Sorcery’s extended early access period.
“We had to untangle some messy code and scale up,” Warpfrog shared. “Essentially, we’re building something from scratch for a new engine. The aim is to develop a framework designed for our team, marking the first time we’re producing a game from top to bottom with a full crew.”
Expectations are certainly running high for Warpfrog’s next move. Originally a solo effort by developer ‘KospY,’ the team has now expanded impressively to nearly 30 members.
Following June’s expansive 1.0 update—which introduced the new ‘Crystal Hunt’ story-based mode—Blade & Sorcery has evolved beyond just a combat sandbox renowned for its intense melee action. It has grown into an adventure game complete with upgrade systems, narrative depth, and a vastly interconnected world.
Reflecting on their journey, Warpfrog stated in a Steam update, “As for Warpfrog’s future… the real excitement begins now. With the knowledge and experience amassed over the past five years, we’re eager to unveil what we’re working on next. Your continued support has fueled our ability to create bigger and better games.”
