In an exciting move for Reforged Studios, the indie publisher has just added another feather to its cap this year by acquiring Yellow Lab Games. While the financial terms of this acquisition haven’t been disclosed, it’s confirmed that the South African developer will maintain its independence, according to a report from GI.biz. Gamers can look forward to Yellow Lab’s intriguing roguelite RPG, “Metavoidal,” which is slated to debut on Steam in the first quarter of 2025.
This purchase follows closely on the heels of Reforged’s acquisition of Ground Shatter and Extra Mile Studios in August, marking a busy and successful year for the company.
Peter Van Der Watt, the CEO and founder of Reforged Studios, expressed his long-held admiration for South Africa’s vibrant game development scene. “Growing up in South Africa, I’ve always been aware of the extraordinary talent in game development that the country nurtures,” he shared. “Yellow Lab Games captured my attention some time ago, particularly after witnessing the enthusiastic response to Metavoidal, their pioneering venture into the PC and console market.”
Peter also highlighted his ongoing commitment to promoting South African game development internationally, a passion he’s pursued since establishing his first game studio in Scotland back in 2011. Today, the entire Reforged board shares his enthusiasm about the potential of the region. “When the opportunity came to bring [Yellow Lab head of studios] David Hecker and his team on board, we jumped at the chance. We’re thrilled to welcome South Africa’s leading game creators to the Reforged family and anticipate this move as the start of a larger investment in Africa’s thriving gaming industry.”
