It’s no secret that Sony’s Spider-Verse, minus Spider-Man, has had its share of disappointments. Yet, the director of Kraven the Hunter is hoping you’ll give his movie a chance.
Now, let’s talk about Venom, Morbius, and Madame Web. Aside from their Spider-Man ties and being Sony productions, the reception for these films hasn’t exactly been stellar. Sure, Venom might have its charm if you enjoy a “so bad it’s good” vibe, but overall, most would agree they left something to be desired. J.C. Chandor, the director behind the upcoming Kraven the Hunter, acknowledges this. In a chat with ComicBook, he openly admitted that these films haven’t always been well-received, but he’s asking for you to consider giving his film a fair shot.
“I’m not getting into the weeds here, but here’s my take: as a filmmaker, my primary mission, particularly in the last few years, is to address the concerns of fans deeply invested in this world,” Chandor stated. “Many have voiced their disappointments with some of Sony’s decisions in its Spider-Man Universe. Yet, there have been other films that saw immense success. So, yes, it’s been a mixed bag. I’m urging people to support this film, to overlook past disappointments, and to give us a fresh opportunity.”
If I can nitpick a little, the “mixed success rate” might be stretching it a bit. Sure, out of five live-action Spider-Verse films, three have done well, but those are all the Venom films. Let’s face it, Venom is a more beloved character than Morbius or Madame Web, which kind of tilts the scales.
Chandor further expressed his hope that audiences will “understand that we’ve poured everything into crafting a fun story. By the time the credits roll, there’s a lot of potential paths we might take. But my aim was to focus solely on the film at hand, to protect it and deliver a truly compelling tale. Then, we’ll have the chance to explore more exciting avenues.”
What could those exciting possibilities be? We can only speculate, but first things first: the film needs to perform well when it hits theaters. We’ll just have to watch and see how it all unfolds.
Mark your calendars—Kraven the Hunter is set to release on December 13.
